The genus Astragalus herb Root is an enormous group of more than 2,000 species distributed worldwide, also known as milk vetches. The Chinese species A. membranaceus and the related A. mongholicus (Astragalus root) are thought to be varieties of the same species. Both are perennial (grow back yearly) herbs native to the northern provinces of China and are cultivated in China, Korea, and Japan. The dried root is used medicinally for centuries. Astragalus roots are sold as long pieces, which have a tough, fibrous skin with a lighter interior (core). Some products are produced by frying the roots with honey, although the untreated root itself has a sweet, licorice kind of taste.

Astragalus root is a very old and well known herb in traditional Chinese medicine, which currently is official found in the Chinese Pharmacopeia. It is used in China principally as a tonic and for treatment of diabetes and nephritis. It is an important component of Fu Zheng therapy in China, where the goal is to boost and restore immune system function and health. There is extensive Chinese literature on the drug.

Astragalus has been revered for more than 2,000 years in China for its pretty yellow root and tonic boosting effects, which include strengthening the immune, respiratory systems, and assisting recuperation from the effects of viruses. Mothers have used this wonderful herb to enhance morning soups with its mildly sweet flavor if the weather turns harsh or a family member is susceptible to winter colds or flu, yet astragalus can exert a potent healing influence all year long on virtually every system in the body when consumed every day.

Also called an adaptogen that build the body’s resistance to stress and disease, astragalus not only seems to fight pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells, it also restores immune function in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Research suggests that astragalus can help heart and kidney benefits as well.

Astragalus is generally used in conjunction with other herbs, such as ginseng, angelica, and licorice. A small amount of research suggests that this herb astragalus may enhance (boost) the effectiveness of treatments for cancer, such as chemotherapy and radiation. There is some indication that astragalus may also lessen the degree of side effects experienced with cancer therapy and improve quality of life, but more studies are needed in this area before a firm conclusion can be reached.

Astragalus is available in capsule, tablet, and liquid extract forms at a health food store. Always look for name brands or astragalus to ensure that you receive a high quality and pure product.
